For years, I crafted projects in my barn for friends, church members, and family. As a semi-retired Network Storage Engineer, I spent over 20 years traveling before deciding to settle down. Those years were filled with traveling, learning, and consulting. Eventually, I purchased a small farm in Davilla, TX, and realized I no longer wanted to travel. My interest in woodworking resurfaced as I took on more furniture and project requests. This rekindled passion led me to shift careers, focusing primarily on woodworking.\nI enjoy using hand tools, hand-making joints, and flattening large tables and tops by hand. However, I recognized the need to balance traditional methods with modern woodworking techniques to manage time and cost effectively. Today, my approach depends on project timelines, budgets, and customer preferences. I’ve built a clientele that appreciates the craftsmanship of detailed work, though I also offer budget-friendly options when needed. I source exceptional wood from local sawmills whenever available, which requires additional steps and tools to prepare but enhances the quality of my pieces.\nThe Future # I cherish being at home with my family—my wife and two young girls—leading them, spending time with them, and running my woodworking business. It brightens my day when my girls visit the workshop to check on “Daddy” during their homeschooling breaks. I can’t imagine raising them only on weekends while traveling for work. I feel blessed to have found this path and plan to continue woodworking as long as the Lord provides customers to serve.\nWhat I Do # My woodworking focuses on crafting furniture, particularly tables, desks, coffee tables, and unique items made from locally sourced wood. I layed out my design for him and he agreed. He wanted to get the slab wood himself. He found the most beautiful piece of sycamore I have yet seen!\nI finished it with an oil varnish mix. The slab had so much spalting (which is where the wood starts rotting) that the wood was very weak. I could scrape off wood with my fingernail. So, using a oil varnish mix which soaks in deep into the fibers of the wood and hardens, which locks the fiber in place and protects the wood.\nThe end product turned out great. The color from the spalting really stands out. pieces of butcher block that he wanted to make something out of. The problem was, he had cut a large section off, and it really looked odd due to the size (woodworking \u0026ldquo;golden rule\u0026rdquo; on rectangles). After working with it, I came up with this concept and he liked it. I made a large island top, putting both pieces together, which open up on slides to access a hidden box for storage. When closed, you have a very large top with 2 separate cutting boards with there own juice groove. The entire base was constructed from reclaimed oak wood which is great for outdoor furniture. The area has a very limited space, that is just a recess into the wall. The desk had to fit within the area, and also needed to have a space to hold the entire audio/video mixer and equipment. I made a large cherry base to hold all the media equipment with air circulation as well as space for wiring. The top is a pecan slab finished with hard wax finish and ceramic topcoat for smooth protection of the surface. I then made a custom surround sound to go around the area to make it a private area, with a door entry.\nThe Surround is made from 8/4 cherry and I created a matt black backing for it and then placed live edged spalted pecan inserts in it. This made a nice private entry for the media group to separate it from the rest of the room.\nAn interesting tidbit, I also made the custom media streaming server for this build. It is a AMD ryzen 16/24 core threadripper cpu, 8 gig Nvida graphics, 64gig ram and 3 24\u0026quot; monitors. They used the wood for laying down across ditches for heavy machinery and trucks to drive over and keep them from getting stuck in the mud. I purchase this wood and make projects from it from time to time.\nThis bench has quite a bit of spalting in it and lots of color. I put bow ties in it to fix a crack that ran along the top of the bench. I also filled the crack with epoxy. The bottom rail is pinned on each side using purple heart.
